After a rich and varied career spanning fleet racing, match racing, the Tour Voile and offshore racing, Sophie Faguet is preparing to take the next step with the\u00a0Globe40 2028\u20132029. <\/em>As she currently prepares for the\u00a0Route du Rhum \u2013 Destination Guadeloupe 2026, Sophie looks back on her career, her ambitions for this upcoming challenge and the reasons that led her to take on a round-the-world race aboard a Class40.<\/em><\/p>\n

Following the second edition of the Globe40 closely, she also shares her perspective on the race, the new 2028\u20132029 route and the challenges involved in a first round-the-world voyage, from discovering new oceans to choosing the boat and building her team.<\/em><\/p>\n

A project that will also focus on\u00a0passing on knowledge, inclusion and solidarity, notably through\u00a0L\u2019Arche en France, Sophie\u2019s long-standing partner. She tells us about the behind-the-scenes development of this project, with the ambition of bringing together performance, adventure and a strong team spirit.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Your sailing career is quite rich and varied \u2013 could you briefly tell us about your background and your main experiences?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I started quite early, thanks to Voile Performance Manche, which gave me access to different boats and different disciplines: fleet racing, match racing and some offshore racing through the Tour de France \u00e0 la Voile. This diversity shaped the beginning of my career. I was absolutely convinced that being versatile was a strength, in the sense that sailing with four, five or six people in fleet racing or match racing always brings new skills, allowing you to reach a kind of peak through a broad range of experience. Today, this is something that is valued more by the FFV, whereas a few years ago that was not necessarily the case.<\/p>\n

Perhaps trying several disciplines slowed my progress in offshore racing, but today preparing for the Route du Rhum takes up 100% of my time. I have limited all my other activities so that I can focus entirely on the project and preparing for this race. I am also focusing on what I want to put in place afterwards. Building new projects takes time, and I care about doing it properly because it will shape the coming years. Ultimately, I have a varied and curious background, enriched by the opportunities that came my way and that I did not know how to turn down, even when they were far removed from what I usually did.<\/p>\n

Your next major event will be the Route du Rhum \u2013 Destination Guadeloupe 2026. How is this project going, and what would you like to achieve in this race?<\/strong><\/p>\n

What I am looking for in this race is validation that all the effort I have put into this project since the end of 2023, with a huge amount of energy on my part, personal resources and sacrifices, has paid off. I want to prove to myself that I was right to make those sacrifices. I want to prove to myself that, with more and more preparation and growing confidence from my partners, I am capable of achieving something significant.<\/p>\n

Simply making it through this preparation, being entered in the Route du Rhum with my qualification secured and with a boat that is better prepared than I had imagined at the beginning of the year is already a great source of satisfaction. Finishing 10th in the Dhream Cup, my second solo race in a Class40, was also a great confirmation. I hope to make it count in the Route du Rhum, which is obviously a much more high-profile race because of its media exposure.<\/p>\n

Has sailing around the world always been a dream of yours, or is it an idea that gradually emerged through your experiences?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It has always been a dream, but I never knew in what form! The Vend\u00e9e Globe seemed so financially inaccessible to me that I never really imagined myself taking part in that race. On the other hand, the possibility of sailing around the world became much more realistic with the creation of the Globe40. It became much more achievable for me.<\/p>\n

This race brings together everything I am looking for: a boat that spends more time sailing than in the boatyard, and relatively reasonable budgets. I also want to put the collective back at the heart of the project. I would really like to return to the model I built during the Tour Voile: create a committed and motivated team, with a more experienced skipper who would help me progress faster, genuine gender parity and, of course, give a young talent the opportunity to come and learn alongside us.<\/p>\n

I really want to recreate that team spirit and that culture of performance and knowledge-sharing.<\/p>\n

The Globe40 has already attracted a lot of attention since its first editions. What is your view of what you have seen and followed of this race?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is true that I followed the last edition more closely because direct competitors of mine took part, notably the Cr\u00e9dit Mutuel crew and the Belgian crew. These are people I know, so I paid particularly close attention to them.<\/p>\n

I thought the race was very well covered, and the fact that it kept our partners engaged for eight months, with such incredible suspense, was a real strength for a project like this. There were several races within the race, between the newer boats and the older-generation boats.<\/p>\n

I found everything you can expect from an offshore racing competition: suspense, storms, damage and some incredible sporting moments, especially when sailors arrive neck and neck after a 30-day leg. There were plenty of twists and turns, which kept the race alive right to the end.<\/p>\n

That is what makes this race so beautiful, especially in a round-the-world event where there are so many more factors that can potentially disrupt things. I got caught up in it myself and followed it much more closely than I expected, despite my busy schedule. It was a race that really thrilled me, and it makes me want to be on the starting line of the next edition.<\/p>\n

The third edition will feature a different route from the previous ones. What do you think of the route planned for this third edition?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I only see positives because I know R\u00e9union, whereas I don’t know South Africa at all!<\/p>\n

What I like about this route is the opportunity to combine performance, competition and travel. I also do this job to discover new places. The Globe40 offers that cultural richness and an opportunity to open yourself up to the world.<\/p>\n

Of everything a round-the-world race represents, what are you most looking forward to discovering?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I can’t wait to leave the Atlantic Ocean! I am starting to know it quite well after so many transatlantic crossings. I am very curious to discover other environments, other oceans and other weather phenomena.<\/p>\n

I also want to experience longer legs, which will be a change from the usual transatlantic races, with their 15 days at sea. I want to discover different ways of sailing and different ways of managing physical effort over the long term.<\/p>\n

If you could imagine the perfect Class40 to take around the world, what would be the essential features for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

If I had a completely free hand, I would go with a Lift 3! These boats, which were launched fairly recently, certainly look like impressive racing machines. Of course, they are sailed by talented skippers, and from the outside it almost looks easy (laughs).<\/p>\n

On the other hand, I am gradually becoming attached to Grand Rhino, Class40 #175, which I currently sail. It is a proven and reliable boat. Of course, it will need to be adapted for offshore sailing because it offers little protection. I think that by improving this boat, which dates from 2022, it could be possible to be competitive.<\/p>\n

Beyond the boat itself, there is also a state of mind. I am not the only one who wants to take this boat to the Globe40. The owner and the people close to the project are also very keen to take on this kind of challenge. A team is forming around this idea and is taking shape more and more.<\/p>\n

But first and foremost, in my mind, there is a Route du Rhum to complete and validate.<\/p>\n

Behind the boat and the sailor, we imagine there will be an entire team bringing this project to life. How do you want to build this team, and what qualities will be essential to taking on this adventure? Do you already have an idea of what your team will look like?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The shore team is already fairly clear, yes. In terms of project management and adapting the boat, there is already a competent team working on the subject.<\/p>\n

Motivation is essential for me. I need motivated people because this is a major medium-term commitment. There are areas I know less about, such as structural issues. I need to learn and be guided on those aspects.<\/p>\n

Through the Route du Rhum, I am testing things with young people in terms of boat preparation and communication. It is also a way of passing on knowledge by giving young people who do not yet have much professional experience in their fields the opportunity to get involved.<\/p>\n

Of course, I want to race under the colours of L\u2019Arche en France because this is a story we have been writing together for a long time. L\u2019Arche is present across France as well as internationally. I want to carry a message of inclusion, solidarity and kindness internationally. It is a universal message.<\/p>\n

As for the sailors who will accompany me, I obviously have certain people in mind, but I won’t reveal them. From experienced sailors to young talents, including female sailors, I am keeping an eye on what is happening around me in the Class40 circuit and beyond.<\/p>\n

It is a little too early to talk to these people about it because, for now, we have a major project to manage with the Route du Rhum, and because the project is still under construction. I would like to present them with a reliable, well-developed project before inviting them on board.<\/p>\n

L\u2019Arche en France plays an important role in your project. How did this partnership come about, and what brought you together? What would you like to convey through the Globe40?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We met through my main partner, La Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Industrielle du Havre. The president of this Normandy-based company, Corinne Migraine, is active in the sailing world, and we share a common vision.<\/p>\n

Meeting the L\u2019Arche project in Le Havre was clearly a bit of a coup de foudre. It was a community that was already familiar with the sea and the maritime world, and the welcome was immediately spontaneous and enthusiastic.<\/p>\n

We have stayed together ever since, and the partnership has grown as we have welcomed more and more L\u2019Arche communities, with a mindset that is genuinely focused on diversity and intergenerational connections.<\/p>\n

There is a great deal of kindness and curiosity about others within this organisation, and those are really the two things that matter most to me.<\/p>\n

The start is still two years away. What will your sporting programme look like until the 2028 start?<\/strong><\/p>\n

My idea is to make 2027 a season that is useful for the Globe40 project. Start identifying an experienced co-skipper, and make the most of crew training sessions and sailing to select the rest of the team.<\/p>\n

I want to find a strong partnership. I would love to do it with someone more experienced in order to create a solid foundation for the Globe40. The earlier we start working towards this race, the better. We will also have to find time in the schedule for the boatyard period.<\/p>\n

After the Route du Rhum, every step we take will be aimed at building the best possible team for the Globe40. That will truly be the philosophy of the project from 2027 onwards.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>
